Cardiff Combat Workshop

Please note proof must be provided when applying for the courses. This is to ensure that you receive the right training from the right course. The staff or the course organisers are not held responsible should you apply for a course and do not have the relevant experience or training to complete or take the course you believe you should be at against the requirements to level of training a participant is currently at.

All exams will be presented in the format of a dramatic performance and must include text.

The Course runs from Saturday 14th - Saturday 21st of July 2012 and costs £600 for the full week for non members and £575 for A2A members. There is also an early booking discount of £25. This covers all accommodation, 3 meals a day, all evening workshops, use of the castle’s facilities and exam fees. A £100 DEPOSIT IS REQUIRED TO SECURE A PLACE, the deposit is NON REFUNDABLE or TRANSFERABLE, taking the course does NOT guarantee a qualification. For Academy of Performance Combat ‘Actors to Arms’ members there is a discount if you put your Actors to Arms membership on the form, at the time of booking.

Basic Level

This course is the standard test that is run by most Drama schools within the UK. It deals with the study of RAPIER and COMPANION WEAPON, SINGLE SWORD (SS) and UNARMED combat. With greater emphasis on the safety aspects, also combining the use of classical text, to create a dramatic combat.

Intermediate Level

Intermediate requirements for entry, Pass at Basic Level 1 or three weapons from the APC Basic syllabus

This course/test must be taken before attempting any Advanced training. The use of these weapons is more of a historical base, sword & shield system, staff and one other weapon from the syllabus. Like the previous exam Level exam, this test will require the use of text.

Advanced

(A Basic Level 2 certificate or three weapons from the APC Intermediate syllabus is required before taking)

This year we will be running the Advanced course. This course is only advised if you have passed a Basic level 2 or intermediate. This is one of the gruelling and challenging of the tests. This level consists of 5 weapons that are at the Fight Master's choice. These weapons are to be confirmed nearer the time but currently will include unarmed in a swimming pool, quarter staff & case of rapiers, the final two weapons will be listed soon. Text as always must be included.

Honours

(five weapons from the APC Intermediate syllabus are required before taking)

Film Course

This course will provide an actor with a show reel they are free to use as publicity as an actor. The course will be taught by7 Kevin McCurdy, who has worked as sword master on 'Season of the Witch' (Nicholas Cage) and Disney Pixar's new film 'John Carter of Mars'.

It's not all work and no play

On the course we also believe down time is very important. We run a vast variety of workshops in the evening which you are all invited to join in with but not obliged to. In the past we have run Mixed Martial Art, Gun handling and Caporera workshops as well as Ghost walks, Game nights and much more.
